Jeffrey Jordan, President and CEO

Jeff Jordan is president and CEO of PRB. He provides strategic leadership and vision for PRB, with the goal of ensuring positive programmatic and financial performance. Jordan works to strengthen resource mobilization capacities; increase organizational visibility; and broaden the embrace of innovation and creativity in PRB’s work and culture. Prior to PRB, Jordan was the senior vice president for international programs at the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), where he provided oversight and strategic input for all international programs in HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, neglected and tropical diseases, and gender. He managed CMMB's field staff and the medical volunteer program, and oversaw the monitoring and evaluation unit and the grants acquisition department. Jordan's demographic experience is rooted in his work at the Population Resource Center (1990-1994), followed by the Futures Group/Constella Futures (1994-2007). At Futures, he first served as an analyst and program manager in population, family planning/reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS, before becoming vice president of program development and chief operating officer. In the United States and internationally, Jordan has applied his technical experience in policy communication and constituency building, institution building, and applied policy research and analysis. His practice areas have included policy analysis and presentation training, GIS applications of health survey data, demographic links to related sectors including the environment and food security, and gender. He served for nearly a decade as the cochair of the USAID Interagency Gender Working Group. Jordan has worked extensively throughout Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and Eastern Europe. He has written and presented on topics ranging from demographic trends to contraceptive security to gender and reproductive health policy. He holds a master's degree in public affairs from Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs; and a bachelor's from Davidson College. He is a member of the Board of Directors of IMA WorldHealth.

Viresh Desai, Chief Financial Officer

Viresh Desai is chief financial officer of PRB. Prior to joining PRB, he was vice president of finance for Development & Training Services (dTS), a government contractor that provides technical assistance to the U.S. Agency for International Development in the areas of monitoring and evaluation, capacity development and learning, and gender and social inclusion. From 2008 to 2013, Desai was chief financial officer at the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and from 2004 to 2008, he was vice president and chief financial officer of the International Science & Technology Institute, a privately held for-profit company that provides assistance to developing countries through technical, managerial, and financial expertise. He also has served as vice president and chief financial officer at Helen Keller International, the oldest international nonprofit organization devoted to fighting and treating preventable blindness and malnutrition; and John Snow, Inc., an international health consulting firm. During his career, Desai has trained staff and audited field financial activities in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and parts of Europe. Desai holds a master of business administration from The George Washington University with a specialization in finance and investments. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Bombay in production engineering.

Peter Goldstein, Vice President, Communications and Marketing

Peter Goldstein is PRB's vice president for Communications and Marketing. Prior to joining PRB Peter spent more than seven years at InterMedia, a global nonprofit research group, where he led communications and business development activities. Peter has expertise in crafting research dissemination strategies with an emphasis on presenting data and insights to multiple stakeholder groups in accessible and meaningful formats—including through customized online knowledge hubs and various social media channels. While at InterMedia, he also developed international research partnerships with leading philanthropic and multilateral funders, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank Group. Prior to joining InterMedia, Peter spent 20 years in media as a reporter and editor with Kiplinger, the Wall Street Journal, and Dow Jones Newswires. During his career, he was posted in Paris, Brussels, London, New York, and Washington, D.C., with reporting assignments that took him to several African and Asian countries. Peter holds a master's degree in African studies and international economics from the Johns Hopkins University's Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a bachelor's degree in politics from University of California, Santa Cruz. He is fluent in French.

Linda A. Jacobsen, Vice President, U.S. Programs

Linda Jacobsen is vice president of U.S. Programs at PRB. She is a demographer with more than 30 years of experience analyzing population trends and their implications for professional, policy, media, and general audiences. Her research has focused on family and household demography, population estimates and projections, and poverty and inequality. She has extensive research experience with the American Community Survey (ACS), and co-authored two of the U.S. Census Bureau's handbooks for understanding and using ACS data. Jacobsen is a member of the Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) panel addressing priority technical issues for the next decade of the ACS, and served on the Steering Committee for CNSTAT’s workshop on the ACS in 2012. She also leads PRB's project to develop and coordinate an ACS data users group. Jacobsen is Chair of the Government and Public Affairs Committee of the Population Association of America, Chair of the Social Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association, and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics. She has been a featured speaker on U.S. demographic trends at the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and at Harvard University's Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress. She has also been interviewed on NBC, CBS, CNN, and NPR, as well as by many newspapers including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune. Prior to joining PRB in 2005, Jacobsen was a senior executive and chief demographer for two leading marketing information companies; the research director at American Demographics magazine; and a faculty member at Cornell University and the University of Iowa, where she conducted research and taught graduate studies in sociology and demography. She holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a bachelor's in sociology from Reed College.

Barbara Seligman, Vice President, International Programs

Barbara Seligman is vice president of International Programs at PRB. She is a technical leader and senior manager with a record of accomplishment in visioning and strategy, mentoring, external relations, and in building practice areas in reproductive health and health policy, health governance, and youth. Seligman brings a unique combination of technical and programmatic expertise that integrates policy development, evaluation and learning, and gender into programming across development sectors, including health, governance, and the environment. Seligman has served in senior leadership and advisory roles with nonprofit and for-profit development consulting firms, foundations, think tanks, and the U.S. government. Barbara devoted the first 20 years of her career—including eight years in USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health—exclusively to reproductive health. Her notable reproductive health accomplishments include: evaluating the program learning potential of more than 80 research projects receiving support under the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Population and Poverty initiative; serving as chief of party for USAID's flagship health systems strengthening program in Georgia; integrating reproductive health into national health policy and financing strategies; and serving as principal investigator for a landmark evaluation of the economic and policy benefits of interventions for preventing and treating post-partum hemorrhage funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She is a native English speaker proficient in French and German. She holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree in anthropology and public policy from the University of Chicago.

Charlotte Feldman-Jacobs, Associate Vice President, International Programs, and Program Director, Gender

Charlotte Feldman-Jacobs is an associate vice president in International Programs; program director, Gender; and deputy director of USAID-funded IDEA project. She has coordinated communications and dissemination for the Interagency Gender Working Group (IGWG) for the past 10 years. She is also co-chair of the IGWG Gender-Based Violence Task Force, and a member of the IGWG Technical Advisory Group. Her primary areas of focus are gender and reproductive health, especially gender-based violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation/cutting. Prior to joining PRB, Feldman-Jacobs worked at the International Center for Research on Women, where she was a writer and editor focusing on gender and development. For over a decade before that, she was a reporter and editor on various newspapers and magazines, including the Chicago Tribune and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She also worked on Capitol Hill for more than 10 years, as a legislative assistant in Foreign Affairs and as a press secretary. Feldman-Jacobs has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in legal journalism from Southern Illinois University.

Mark Mather, Associate Vice President, U.S. Programs

Mark Mather is associate vice president of U.S. Programs at PRB, where he specializes in issues related to U.S. social and demographic trends, child and family well-being, and data from the U.S. Census Bureau. He coordinates several projects that communicate population research to advocacy groups, educators, the media, and the public. He has authored more than a dozen reports on the well-being of children and families and writes articles and blogs on U.S. population trends and their implications. He provides technical support and training for the Annie E. Casey Foundation's KIDS COUNT network and other audiences. His research is frequently cited by the New York Times, the Associated Press, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. Prior to joining PRB, Mather was a data analyst for a private-sector demographic research firm and spent three years as a Hewlett Foundation Trainee at the University of Maryland's Center on Population, Gender, and Social Inequality. He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in sociology/demography from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Rhonda R. Smith, Associate Vice President, International Programs

Rhonda R. Smith is an associate vice president of International Programs at PRB, where she works on issues related to family planning, reproductive health, and nutrition. She is a policy advocacy specialist, assisting partners in developing countries with translating, communicating, and using data for policy reform. Smith has conducted numerous advocacy workshops on topics ranging from population and family planning to gender-based violence and has developed strategic frameworks for policy action, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, she is leading a global initiative—RENEW—that focuses on the costs and consequences of malnutrition, using innovative data visualization technologies to engage high-level policymakers. Prior to coming to PRB, Smith worked in the USAID mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, managing a large rural maternal and child health care program. She has written or contributed to many policy-relevant publications and training materials and has worked in more than 15 developing countries including Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Niger, Mali, Morocco, Rwanda, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam. Smith is proficient in French and holds a B.A. in nursing and a M.A. in public health from the University of Michigan.

Program Directors

Marlene A. Lee, Senior Program Director, Academic Research and Relations

Marlene Lee is program director, Academic Research and Relations. She brings more than 25 years of relevant experience in applied research and policy analysis, public administration, evaluation, research dissemination, policy communication, and design and delivery of experiential training. At PRB, she has summarized and communicated findings from demographic, reproductive health, and economic research. She has collaborated with academic institutions, including Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan. Lee has also managed collaborative international partnerships, developing research meetings with local partners and managing a collaborative grant effort with the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Netherland's NWO/WOTRO, and Research Council of Norway. Her training experience includes coordination and design of management seminars for state government employees, workshops for Peace Corps volunteers, and survey administration for field teams. She has designed and conducted policy research on the transition from AFDC to TANF in Louisiana and conducted evaluations of microcredit programs in the United States and Malawi. She received a Ph.D. from Cornell University, an MPA/Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from Yale University.

Elizabeth Leahy Madsen, Program Director, International Programs

Elizabeth Leahy Madsen is a program director in International Programs and leads PRB’s Bridging High-Impact Family Planning Communications and Advocacy project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She has 14 years of research, advocacy, and program management experience, specializing in family planning policy, political demography, modeling, and the intersections between population and multisectoral development. Before joining PRB in 2016, Madsen was a senior technical advisor at Palladium/Futures Group, where she served as technical lead for Development on the USAID-funded Health Policy Plus project, managed demographic dividend activities, and designed and implemented several multisectoral policy models. She was also a senior research associate at Population Action International (now PAI) and has served as a consulting writer and speaker on political demography issues for the Aspen Institute, George Washington University, and the Woodrow Wilson Center. Madsen is proficient in Spanish and holds an M.A. in International Affairs from the George Washington University and a B.A. in International Relations from Knox College.

Deborah Mesce, Program Director, International Media Training

Deborah Mesce is program director for International Media Training. She organizes programs and develops opportunities to work with journalists from developing countries to increase and improve their media coverage of reproductive health, environment, and other population-related issues. Mesce coordinates a global network of women journalists called Women's Edition and organizes programs for journalists in eastern, southern and western Africa and in South Asia. Her training projects include seminars, study tours, and mentorship programs. Her journalism background includes more than 20 years with the Associated Press, most of it in Washington, DC, where her assignments included covering health and welfare issues at the Department of Health and Human Services, in Congress, and in the courts. In 1998, she went to Beirut, Lebanon, as a Knight International Press Fellow to teach at a university and to train Lebanese journalists. She received her B.A. in communications from the University of Vermont.

Kristen P. Patterson, Program Director, People, Health, Planet

Kristen P. Patterson is the program director of People, Health, Planet with the Population Reference Bureau (PRB). She has 20 years of experience working at the nexus of community development, public health, and environmental conservation. Prior to joining PRB, Kristen managed external affairs focused on community-based conservation for the Africa Region of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for almost six years. During her tenure with TNC, Kristen helped launch a PHE project in western Tanzania called Tuungane. Prior to TNC, Kristen worked in Madagascar as a USAID Population-Environment Fellow to improve health care, access to family planning, and natural resources management in rural communities adjacent to national parks. Kristen has also conducted research in Niger on conflict management strategies used by farmers and pastoralists. Kristen holds a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins with a focus in women’s and reproductive health, as well as a master of science in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development and a certificate in African Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Colby College. Kristen began her career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger.

Marissa Pine Yeakey, Program Director, Capacity Building

Marissa Pine Yeakey is program director, Capacity Building with Population Reference Bureau and deputy director, Field Support on the PACE project. She has over 15 years of experience in international women’s health, specifically family planning and safe motherhood. At PRB, Yeakey directs the capacity building portfolio in the International Programs department, focusing on strengthening advocates’ skills in communicating research. She has conducted policy communication workshops for experts in population and family planning around the world, and has trained over 200 individuals. She is also involved in research and writing for PRB’s publications and ENGAGE presentations, which use multimedia technologies to communicate complex health issues for global and regional policy audiences. Yeakey has written and contributed to numerous journal articles and publications and has experience in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Yeakey holds a Master of Health Sciences degree in Reproductive, Perinatal, and Women’s Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a B.A. in Human Development and Social Relations from Earlham College.

Carl Haub, Demographer Emeritus

Carl Haub is Demographer Emeritus at PRB. A specialist in the compilation and analysis of demographic data and dissemination, Haub has been with PRB since 1979. He has written numerous articles for publication in journals and the general press on a broad range of topics. Most noteworthy among his many published works is the World Population Data Sheet, which has an annual circulation of more than 100,000, and which he has authored since 1980. A recognized expert in the field, he has compiled over 100 data sheets in the last 30 years, many of which were produced in multiple languages. Haub specializes in demography and health in India, a country to which he has traveled since 1994 to work on demographic projects and presentations. He has also worked in Belarus, Costa Rica, Germany, Honduras, India, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Seychelles, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam, and Zambia, He holds a B.A. in political science and a M.A. in demography from Georgetown University.
